Gwynneth I have my Granny's sister's daughter looking for her Mother's birth cert at the moment, which will give me Mary Eleanor's name. Thanks I will try and send for my other Granny's, Emily Florence's, birth cert to get Sabina's name. Sometimes you just get stuck on what to do next, don't you? Anyway thanks again for all your help. Luv Lorr x x x

Dwain - yes that's my family, I put it on in the hope that someone might get in touch. I've had one contact through here which I'm waiting to check out but otherwise I haven't been lucky - YET! x

Lorriane, I've just dug this website out - I used it a few weeks ago. It's for the parish of Fovant and has transcriptions of Fovant baptisms, marriages, burials and some censuses. Might be helpful for your Sangar family. http://homepage(.)ntlworld(.)com/david(.)brown6666/wiltsopc/fovant/fovant(.)htm Cazza

Hi Lorriane, If you find a possible marriage, check first with the local register office where the marriage was registered before you apply to the GRO for a copy. As a general rule, most local registrars wouldn't supply a marriage certificate without you knowing the church or whatever where the marriage took place, as they don't have the time to search through maybe dozens of different registers, but some now have a central marriage index, so it's not a problem, and if they don't find you a match from the info you give them, they refund all of your money, not just part of it as the GRO does. Lorr You don't need to know the wife's surname to send for the marriage cert. In fact thats usually what I get it for - to find it out! With a name like Plumb you can probably find a likely marriage in the GRO indexes. You only need the ref numbers to send for it. Admittedly Edwards could be more of a challenge but you could specify the wife first name when you send for it so you don't lose the whole £7. The full GRO index can be found on 1837on;line or in your nearest large library, archive office or LDS centre.

Thank you Cazza. I have Julius and Catherine's marriage certificate 1896. It states that her father was Angus - deceased. I have them on 1891 and 1901 census. I have Henry Edwards etc on 1901 census. I have Alfred Dear etc on 1891 - 1901 census. Also John Plumb etc on 1891 - 1901 census. Someone kindly saw some information on Catherine McArthur but said that there were 35 born around the same time! I just wondered where the 'best' place to look for further information was now? Might it be a records office? I can't send for Sabina or Mary Eleanor's certs because I don't know their surnames. Thanks for your help x

Hi thank you Heather I should have said that I've looked on freeBMD. Does Ancestry give you more information? I've never used it? x

Hi Lorraine, Where have you got your information from so far. I'm assuming you have the actual marriages for 2 sets of grandparents, so you are ready to go a generation back with them already, but obviously you are stuck on finding marriages for the other two? Are you having difficulty finding the births for some of them? Have you tried Free BMD or Familysearch, or censuses for example? If you could let us know where you've looked we might be able to be more precise in what you could try next. Best wishes, Cazza

Heather

Heather Report 3 Oct 2004 14:05

Hi, you can try a couple of sites, FreeBMD, for births, marriages and deaths. Or you could try ancestry.com or familysearch On their marriage certs the full names will be given plus the names of their fathers. From that you can trace further back.

I have my four Gt Grandparent's Alfred Dear born Salisbury Wilts (1852) married to Sarah Sanger born Fovant Wilts (1862) John Plumb born Bayswater (1867) married to Sabina (unknown) born Netley, Hampshire (1869) Julius Clarke born Barbados (1858) married to Catherine Best 'widow' nee McArthur born Scotland (1858) Henry Edwards born Birkenhead, Cheshire (1868) married to Mary Eleanor (unknown) born Liverpool, Lancashire (1872). Sorry this is long winded but I've searched and searched without any luck and I know there are many out there with good ideas who might be able to help? Thank you for reading this and any suggestions would be much appreciated. Luv Lorr x x x
