How should I enter step relationships?

I can understand your wife's point of view and putting her first spouse as 'unknown' will work. However in my opinion (and please don't take this as a critisism as it's not meant to be) I don't see the point of doing a family tree unless it is accurate, warts and all. In years to come the tree will be less useful to future generations if they come to a brick wall with this first partners name. I know how frustrated I am because my grandmother was illegitimate and there is no one alive today who has any idea who her father was (the name wasn't recorded on any records). That branch of my tree is dead. Kath

Could you enter a fictitious partner with the same surname as hers and first name unknown, or ever a question mark.

Thanks for the tip but that can't work in this case as she does not want to acknowledge her previous partner and the children took her surname until they chose mine when we married.

Hi, Enter her first partner and then the children as of that partnership. Gwynne

I have 2 stepchildren who adopted my name when their mother & I married. When I entered them into my tree I did so by adding a child to my wife's entry and using their birth surname but they appear below my box as my children (which they are emotionally). Is there any way of getting the line to come out of my wife's box?
