Thanks for your reply Crista. I have actually contacted Joan and she is trying to help but agrees that my person is rather elusive and no luck tracing her so far!

Sarah, Try Joan Allan at www.myfolks*co.uk She charges a small fee to cover the cost of her equipment but she has helped a lot of people on this site. Crista

Thanks for this Carol. Unfortunately the surname is Williams so it does make things more difficult. I have searced for her by birth name and there is one possibility in Manchester. I didn't know about reference checking option so this is really useful info - thank you. We have also identified a further 8 possible marriages within an 80 mile radius so I can now obtain certs using the ref checking option and hopefully this will narrow things down. Thanks again.

When you order a marriage certificate, state an age range, and if that is not on the certificate, they should refund your money. If you order online from the link on 1837online there is a checking point option. I quote Reference Checking Options If you would like more than one GRO Index reference checked for this certificate application or have checking points you wish to be checked against the entry please click on the button marked "Reference Checking" This could save you money by not getting the wrong certificate again.

You have her date of birth,. She could have married at 16, or as you say never married at all. She may not have married in the Manchester area, so you really need to look at neighbouring area or even further afield. I understand about not giving a name, but is the surname a common one or not. If it is a particularly common name, then that makes it more difficult if she married miles away from her birthplace. (obvious really) Have you tried finding her by using her birth name at all.

I am desperately trying to find details of my husbands birth mother and would really appreciate some advice. We know her name, date of birth, who her parents were, some of her brothers names, some addresses but CAN NOT find a logical marriage for her and therefore do not know her new name (of course she may not have married). She was born in the early 40's and raised in the Manchester area so I have searched marriages in that area and sent of for quite a few marriage certs thinking, yep, we've found her but hit a brick walls each time. We've had really fantastic support from a GR contact but wondering if anyone else can offer any advice/experience? It would be so easy if we could match her date of birth with a married name but I don't think this is possible and I am not sure how many more £7 marr. certs we can afford!!! I don't want to post her actual name or details because I respect the possible sensitivity of this but if anyone can help, PLEASE do let me know! Thank you.
