unique surnames?

Or "distinct" surnames? I agree about the misuse of "unique". It diminishes the value of words when they get misused. If "unique" now gets used to mean "very rare" or just "unusual" what can you use when something is, genuinely, unique? Christine |

Bit like the number of times you read "more unique" in the papers. Something is either unique or not unique so how can it be more unique? MB |

They use the same term on auction sites to count feedback. By number of unique feedback points they mean feedback from different people. I know it can seem confusing to people, but what other term could be used to differentiate between the number of names in your tree and the number of different surnames. Incidentally, I have BALL and BALLS but they are the same family, just depended on what went on the certificates |

Doesn't anyone else think this is confusing? I have a JELLERS in my tree, which according to my Name Summary, is the only one on this website. To me, that is a unique surname. Not HILL that has 33,000 or more listed! Surely unique means 'one of a kind' i.e the only one?! Sam |

I think Linda is right. They just mean you have so many different names in your tree, i.e. if you have Smith, Jones and Brown you have 3 unique surnames |

According to GR I have 47 unique surnames on my list. I only have 3 which have one person in the name. Any idea what the definition of unique is? Cheers, Yours uniquely Jeanie |
