Death registered twice!

Has anyone come across this before? - Bloke died 1 Dec 1910. Death registered by his son on 2nd Nov. On 5 Dec death registered a second time by a different son. Death date still 1 Nov. I found 2 entries in the GRO indexes so sent to the County office for the cert rather than Southport. The folk at the County Office have only come across this where the death had originally been registered in the wrong district. Both these registrations were in the same district. Any ideas anyone? To get both certificates is going to cost me £14 - a bit steep for one death! Jill

Not sure how this could have been done, unless the rules have changed since then. When I registered my late husbands death last year, I had to have a doctors notification of death from the hospital, which the registrar took from me. The hospital would only issue one per deseased person. Not sure about what happens when someone dies at home, but I would have thought a similar form would be required.

Is the date of death 1st NOV. or 1st DEC. You give both dates. Are you sure you haven't mixed up two entirely different deaths. Kath

Did you mean the first son registered it on the 2nd Dec ? Perhaps the second son did not realise the first son had registered it so did it again and no-one's checked till now? Kim

Sorry folk. Senility is creeping in. Death occurred on Ist November. First registration 2nd Nov. 2nd registration 5 December.

Was there an inquest? This can delay the registration of a death. Anne

When my partners sister died a certificate was issued to allow burial to take place in accordance with religious practice. After the inquest the death certificate could then be issued. If I were you I'd order the second certificate as if there was an inquest it will contain more details. (I'm not being gruesome, am I?)

Thank you for your suggestions. I don't know yet whether there was an inquest. I'm still trying to decide which cert. to have. Can't afford both! I think I'll probably go for the second and then have a look to see whether there was a report in the local paper. I appreciate everyone's input - thanks. Jill

I am not sure if this applies. But perhaps the first son made an error when giving details. Would this mean when the second son went to rectify the Registrar issued a second certificate, perhaps even by mistake. My grandmother always told us she had a second name. When it came to registering her death my mother gave it. Why would you check if that's what you were told? But you are supposed to inform the Registrar if you know details were incorrect so they can amend them. Shelly
