I know this is off thread, but i agree about google, i find it rubbish, yet every one will say, i will google that, and i always think why, it is not a very good search engine, but its becoming a byword for search engines undeserveingly

It is always worth trying websearches (not necessarily GOOGLE, I find GOOGLE is overrated as it always gives far too many useless commercial sites. Its only advantage is that you search UK sites, vivisimo.com can be better at times.) as you never know what you will find. There are lots of extracts from the census online, some small and some quite extensive. Just try different mixtures of keywords i.e. "census", [placename], [surname] "1891" etc. For example there is one site with a lot of Derbyshire censuses, another with some in Caernarfonshire. I am sure I have found and used others. Martin

Nell, when you say a lot of census info can be found by Googling, can you advise an amateur and tell me how you do it - pretty please? I've found lots of info already, but it'd be very handy to have that tip! I have ancestors around London, Middlesex, Cork and ancestors-in-law in Canada. Many thanks Glenys.

Remember quite a lot of free census info can be found by googling. There's a lot on Gloucestershire/Southern Warwickshire and Cornwall. nell

I'm personally a fan of Ancestry! I took out an annual subscription when I realised this works out at less than £6 a month. I've found lots of useful information on the site, and I particularly like being able to print and keep the actual census image. Makes it more real somehow! Mandy :)

Ancestry is quite good if a little expensive, although I got my years subscription as a Christmas present. You can get a subscription for 3 months and I think you can buy vouchers for so many credits. It has the 1901 census, most of the 1891 census, and they are adding to the 1871 census a couple of counties at a time (you can check to see what is on before subscribing). Kath
