Can anyone tell me if it was necessary that someone had to have been baptised before they could marry in 1826? Any help would be much appreciated Many thanks Christel

Hi, Yes, in order to marry in the "established church" you had to have been christened. In parish records you often find adult baptisms a few weeks before marriages. Gwynne

I suppose if it was not your home parish then no one would know if you were or not.

It cannot have been essential in a period when you could only be legally married under Jewish, Quaker or Church of England rites. But I think that vicars liked the couple to be baptised: I've an ancestor received into the church shortly before he was married, which must have been because he did not know whether he had been baptised or not. You could, of course, say you had been privately baptised. Although the church did not like it, anyone could perform baptism. If it were a midwife, a record might not appear in the registers. Brenda

Gwynne, Geoff and Brenda Thanks for your advice, I had only searched the Parish Registers up to 1812, I guess I now need to search 1813 to 1826 to see if this man was baptised as an adult. Thanks again for your help Christel
