As has been said, Pioneer was the equivalent of a Private soldier. Others incude:- Gunner Trooper Gaurdsman Sapper Signalman Craftsman Driver Paul

Equivalent of a private Have different titles according to which regiment they are in.

Following on from my dilemma whether to purchase a medal card for my grandfather (or not my grandfather!) I notice his rank is stated as Pioneer. What is this please?
