Has anyone got any tips on tracing the records of military bandsmen from WW1, or alternatively miltary records of ordinary soilders from WW1. Thanks...Ian

Hello. If you have the names of individuals or regiment, you could try writing to the Ministry of Defence Records Department. For a small fee, they will be available to provide you will information from the service record(s). However, a large proportion of the WWI records were destroyed during the blitz in WWII, but it might be worth a try. Hope this helps.

If you can get to Kew, WO363 holds many records, despite so many being burnt. If you look at the National Archives site, there should be information leaflets online. Brenda

There have been threads about military research. If you put just that - "military" - into the thread-search window of the Tips board, they might come up. There were lots of useful ideas on them. Christine

You could write directly to the regiment if you know it. My GG Grandfather was a band master with the Royal Engineers, infact he wrote their regimental march music that they still use today, and I wrote to the regiment and they gave me some information, dont know whether it was becasue he wrote the march music they had more details on him, but anyway worth a try. Good Luck - Jayne
