Thanks for your help - I have his birth certificate - no luck - his marriage to my mum was his second marriage and I also have the certificate for that. Will send for his first marriage certificate but have no idea if he was baptised or the church -

Can also be named on marriage cert of child and named in parish records for "support". Christine, in my granddads family there were two Claytons and six Dixons all to same parents (as far as I can tell), so it's not uncommon. Bob

Haven't had to do so myself but if you look at the parish records of the local church he may have been christened and his father named. But try the birth certificate first.

Hello. Try Free BMD/1837 for birth of Fred ***** and then get the certificate. This may? just have fathers details. Otherwise difficult. Good hunting. Keith

My grandmother wasn't married when she had my dad and although she married later he kept her maiden name. He was called Fred - not a family name. Has anyone tried tracing an illigitimate birth and had success?
