Hello Sylvia. Don't know which area of the country he was from, bit in the mill towns they had what were called knocker -uppers who tapped on the bedroom wondows of the Mill workers to get them up and out to work. Jan is right, and he obviously had to do something else with the rest of the day. Incidentally when the Yanks came over and heard the expression they were a bit baffled - in the USA it means to make pregnant. Keith

I have "morning caller +newsagent" Any ideas anyone please, it sounds like he stood on streets selling newspapers to me, but I would have thought that was mostly young lads..he was 25 I've had a look at a couple of old occupation sites with no luck. Maybe I should add this to the funny occupations list, it has all sorts of conitations :-) Sylvia
