Formal adoption started in 1927. The Adoptions Register at the Family Record Centre gives adopted name and year of birth. nell

Unless you have something that says he was adopted I think you'll find he was just born out of wedlock. I think his father was probably Temple and his mother Atkins. If I was you I'd order the certificate and see what it says. If however,he was adopted, I'm pretty certain that there wouldn't have been a new certificate as there was no uniform adoption procedure in those days.

Hi Jeanie That far back I can't be certain but with mine, my original birth cert has the name my birth mother used to register me but across the bottom in big black letters it says ADOPTED. I then have a birth certificate in the name that my adoptive parents gave me. It's worth checking with the General Registry Office cos I'm sure you must be able to get hold of the original if it exists although apparantley it wasn't compulsary to register births that far back so the birth cert you have found may be the only one he had. Does that make sense????

It appears that husband's grandfather was adopted. He was known as Edmund Temple but adopted by Atkins family. Seached 1837 site but no Temple but there he is, correct year of birth under Edmund Temple Atkins. Would a new birth cert have been issued on adoption and what would have happened to orignal one. Many thanks Jeanie
