TinaTheCheshirePussyCat Report 21 Sep 2004 13:44

I have recently tracked down my Great-great-grandfather's sister in Northumberland, and it seems one or more of her sons went to Australia. On the 1881 census I have in her household a 14 year old grandson called George Ross and his birthplace is given as "Lily Dale B Sur, Australia". Can anyone tell me where this is? I cannot find a Lily Dale and I do not know what B Sur means. Also on the 1871 census she has a 24 year old son in the household, also called George Ross, and according to his mother's gravestone, he died in Heidelberg, Australia on 22 April 1912 aged 65. Heidelberg seems to be on the outskirts of Melbourne. I cannot find either George on any other censuses, so I imagine they were both back in Australia. Were there censuses in Australia that I could look for them on, and can I obtain a copy of the older George's death certificate from anywhere, and also look for a marriage in Australia? Any advice would be gratefully received! Tina

Try contacting the state library Victoria, www(.)slv(.)vic(.)gov(.)au - remove brackets. Give them as much info as poss, maybe ask if they can check the electoral records. Another person has received a good response from the Brisbane branch. Good Luck, Mel in Oz.

Thanks Chris and Mel I will try contacting the library. Looks as if I may have distant cousins in Australia with luck. Anyone know any Ross's in Melbourne who originated from Bamburgh? Tina

I'm looking for Isabel Ross (maiden name) in Western Australia, isabel was from Balintore. Unfortunatly there are many Ross families here in Oz as the rest of the world. I have a friend with Ross connections here, i'll check with her for you too. Good Luck, Mel.
