My great-great grandfather was an assistant overseer - someone who helps look after the poor. He was also parish beadle. But I think it is more likely that it is: Overman Colliery supervisor - checked the workers and coal quality [from www*.rmhh*.co*.uk/occup/ - remove * first] nell |

Hi Tracy I have just checked Old Occupations list there is an "OVERMAN" who is a Colliery Superviser, could Overson be either his son or a child in the pit Hope this helps Chris |

I would think it should be "overseer" = supervisor, foreman |

One of my relatives is listed on the 1901 census as having the occupation of Assistan Overson. Does anyone know what that means? |
