Brenda, Perhaps she couldn't spell Alexander but had learnt how to spell her own name! Perhaps she was just ahead of her time.

Montmorency

Montmorency Report 21 Sep 2004 13:09

what you're seeing isn't what's written on the sheet, there's transcriber interpretation and a computer program sticking their oars in. On the original sheets, unlike the LDS version, most surnames are dittoes and many households don't have a Head, because the Head wasn't at home. These are often causes of confusion. You need to see the film

Jan these people are travellers - so nothing is far fetched. Lin

Or were these the actual children of Ovas James, because although it states that Ann Light is a Wife it does not say in the census that she is married. Lin

Jan Report 21 Sep 2004 09:29

It could be that JAMES was Ann's maiden name and all the children were registered in her name but that they were known as LIGHT - either their real father or the man Ann was living with - so perhaps Ovas was her brother? Or is that too far-fetched? Jan

Hmmm... this lot Household: Ann LIGHT ((JAMES)) (Head) ((Wife)) Female 41 Romsey, Hampshire, England George LIGHT ((JAMES)) Son Male 11 Sussex, England Joseph LIGHT ((JAMES)) Son Male 8 Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England Pashens LIGHT ((JAMES)) Daur Female 5 Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England Noah LIGHT ((JAMES)) Daur (Son) Male 4 Yapton, Sussex, England I'm afraid I can't answer the question, but I think the chap in the "previous household" may have something to do with it! Ovas JAMES Head Male 41 Brighton, Sussex, England I'd assume that Mr Light was no longer on the scene (for whatever reason) and that Mr James had made charitable arrangements regarding the welfare of Mrs Light and her brood. EDIT: Doh, too late!

Hello Lin I think it means that Noah was also known as Noah JAMES. Perhaps his mum had a 'liason' with the man in the census entry previous to their entry.
