HI All I have been a bit wary of joining Ancestry as I have read of how difficult it is to get out once you get in. Cancelling seems to be the hardest thing after you join as I dont want to be in it forever.I thought of trying the TRIAL PERIOD but when you have to give your visa card no I get a bit scared as I have read of many who have been unable to cancel in time and had their card charged. Any advice would be appreciated. Mary in Sydney

Hi Joy, you get loads of info on Ancestry and just in my personal opinion, I think it's great! You can see the actual images of the censuses, so you can print them off and keep them. It checks bmd, and lots of other things as well, something called Pallot's Marriage Index to name but one. When I realised it only works out at less than £6 per month, I thought it was good value, and I've certainly got loads of info from it. Mandy :) PS: I'm not working on commission for them though lol!

Is the cost for census or for BMD as well, please, Mandy? Thanks, Joy

Thanks for all replies. I think the idea of suscribing to ancestry is good. I've been dithering about joining for too long now.

Many (all?) counties are available on CD-ROM. I think S&N have most of the country and many other census years. Stepping Stones also do a more limited number as well as Archive CD Book Project. ancestry.co.uk will have the whole of England & Wales online, free to subscribers around February next year. They already have 1891, will complete 1871 around February and will add 1881 inext month. These are indexes (with plenty of errors!) linked to images of the page which you can print or download. Most CD-ROM versions do not allow you to save the image of the page. Scotland is being done separately so none of the above applied to Scotland. Martin

Maureen, it would be cheaper for you to buy a year's subscription to Ancestry. It cost me around £70 and you can view/print/save the actual census page images. Mandy :)

Hi, After the debacle with the launch I bought (from the PRO) the fiche for Lowestoft and Oulton. It cast over £50). Gwynne

Is it possible to buy the 1901 census for the whole of England? I know I can buy it by county but its a lot of money if you only have one family in that area.
