Hi Tina. Thank you for reply. I have trawled all the way through the 1841 census for all districts in Glossop, some feat I can tell you, and could see a single William Woodruff. It took me quite a few days to do it too. I also looke on 1841 and there was nothing. I can only assume that he came from a small village/hamlet near Glossop, which didn't warrant a census!! Unless, of course, the family moved somewhere else after his birth. I am past the ripping out of hair stage now and am resigned to not finding him. He married an Irish lady so I can't find that and there is no trace of death after 1893, when his wife died and he was 'present at death'. I really don't know where to look or what to do next. I have left messages on all sites that I can for Derbyshire, but no luck there. Regards, Margaret

Hi Margaret Here is another site which may help you: http://freepages(.)genealogy(.)rootsweb(.)com/~dusk/index.htm (remove brackets as usual to get web address). It has amongst other things 1841 census for Glossop and nearby villages. A lot of of my husbands rellies came from Glossop and I have found it very useful. Also the Glossop Heritage Centre are very helpful (I think there is a link to them from the web address you were previously given), so may be worth you while contacting them. Good luck Tina

Hi Christine and Mike, I have put requests on the Derbyshire link on Rootschat and every place I can think of that would give me some info, but all I get is a chap from Stockport, which is Cheshire, or Staveley, near Chesterfield, or Tideswell. Now that is a pretty wide range don't you agree? So all I can assume is that he gave duff info to the authorities, or as has been suggested, he didn't know himself or the census people assumed it was Glossop!! So I am at a huge brickwall until I can find his birth details. He doesn't seem to want to be found. I wonder why??!! Margaret

If you're relying on census info...Perhaps he didn't give the correct info to the enumerator(s)? May not have known it, or have forgotten it. My great-grandfather, William Charles LANCASTER, was born in Maidenhead (1881 & 1901) or Ilford (1891). It takes a pretty massive stretch of the imagination to make these into the same place. I couldn't find the right birth registration in the Maidenhead area at the right time, but I can find one in Romford: William Cherlee LANCASTER. As this index is typed, I can imagine Charles, in handwriting, being misread as Cherlee. Might be worth trying for more sources to see if anything different turns up! Christine

Hi Susanne and Sheila, The only information I have of his birthplace is on the 1881 and 1891 census. He states that his birthplace is Glossop, Derby c 1838. So that was why I was asking the question, to see if there was another Glossop, perhaps in Derby itself. I am familiar with the Glossop that Sheila mentions, and couldn't find another one on my map. I did wonder if he put Glossop as his birthplace when the census taker didn't know where the place was and asked him for somewhere nearer that he recognised !! lol It is driving me mad, as this chap is the reason I started doing my family tree. He was in the army from 1857 to 1882, but unfortunately, his records are not showing at Kew!! Some days I feel like giving up on him but then I think otherwise!! So frustrating when you can't find a record for birth or death either. Regards, Margaret

Hi Margaret. I lived in Glossop Derbyshire for 6 years, and have never heard of another one. mine was the one at the other end of the Snake pass 25 miles from Sheffield. Are you sure your rellie was born in glossop? I only ask because I wasted a year thinking my great gran was born in Belgium, as stated on 1891 and 1901 census's, but on the 1881 it said she was born in Liverpool, and sure enought when I tracked down her birth certificate, she was born in Liverpool. Her mother was the one born in Belgium. Sheila.

Hi Margaret, 1841 census shows a township of Glossop in the parish of Glossop in the hundred of High Peake, Derbyshire. I did try looking for William in the township but I could not find him (a few pages were too badley faded to read), if he meant the parish of Glossop that is a large area covering 19 townships!!! Hi, I am desperately trying to find my great grandfather William Woodruff(e), who says he is born in Glossop, Derby c 1838. The only records I can find are for Stavely, which is nearer to Chesterfield and Sheffield than the Glossop I am familiar with, which is nearer to Stockport. I note that is says Glossop, DERBY, and have presumed that it was DERBYSHIRE. Could there be a Glossop in Derby itself? After 6 years I am still trying to find this record!!! Hope someone can come up with a new idea!! Margaret
