Pre 1812, some record keeping left a lot to be desired. A bit like my notes, there would be lots of slips of paper, carefully sorted out and written up perhaps once a year. Some would be lost, some entered out of order, some doubtless lost or used to light pipes. Occasionally, the details weren't noted properly when the event took place. If you are convinced that a burial took place but isn't recorded, look to see if there are surviving Bishops or Archdeacons transcripts. These are theoretically copies of the registers, but occasionally contain entries that are not in the original, and vice versa. You didn't have your family buried for free. Sometimes, particularly for infants, a blind eye was turned: no entry, no fee. Records were better kept in particular periods. If there was a tax on burials at the time, paupers would be specifically noted in the burial registers as the fee would be waived for them. Besides the probably unlikely possibility that your ancestors emigrated or died at sea, they may have moved out of the area either in search of work or to follow family members. Brenda

Cant suggest anything else, unless you list who you are trying to find, and see if the great people on G.R. can help.Ihave had some fantastic folk helping me, what have you got to loose?..just had a thought, were they Quakers? They have a separate records office etc. I am told. Good luck. Sheila.

Sheila for a least 1 death I asked the local office for a search which they could not find and I have phoned all cemetrys in the area and it turned up nothing so perhaps he was buried in the back garden joking of course but this one in particular i have been looking for 3 years will keep trying though Margaret

Are all your deaths around one area and time period? Clutching at straws but could a batch of pages been distroyed in a records office somewhere. Desparate measures, but maybe if the deaths are not too far back, local cemeteries, undertakers may still have records. Perhaps the council in the area can do a cemetery search, if you have names and dates of deaths. Some charge, but Rochdale council did a detailed search for me for free , and found where my grat gran was buried...not a death certificate, but maybe better than nothing.

Margaret Are you unable to find any deaths at all for your names, or just deaths that don't seem right? People sometimes die and are therefore registered in places you don't expect, and ages at death can be guesses. nell

Probably a silly question, but have you tried diffferent spellings of the surnames.i have found 7 different spellings of one of my family names from Stortoz to Horley, and everything in between.

Where are you looking for the deaths? A lot of websites still haven't transcribed all years.Free MBD shows a graph of years not yet transcribed.1837 online is a good bet if you have name and year and place of person. Good luck. Sheila.

Hi, I am having the same problem too. It would appear that not all records have yet been transcribed. I live in hope that they will be before I draw my last!! Margaret
