Perhaps his father was a soldier in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, they have a museum at Caernarvon Castle, they may have records of births connected with the regiment. Rachel

As someone else has said you can check the BMD records though you cannot guarantee that a birth will be registered at that period. Not sure if there was a chapel associated with Caernarfon Castle but you can search Gwynedd Archives catalogue online. This might show if they have a copy of baptisms there. I think Gwynedd FHS have some baptism records available on fiche - check their website. I am not sure whether the castle was used as quarters for married soldiers in that period. It might just be that he was born near the castle or in the local barracks then the story got altered over the years. There are a number of Caernarfonshire and Gwynedd message lists on ROOTSWEB, you might get some more local information if you ask there. Martin

If he was born in England or Wales he should have been registered in the normal way. I think there were separate army records for postings overseas, but I don't think Caernarvon qualifies as abroad! Have you tried looking for a baptism record? nell

Hi Does anyone know if I would be able to find the birth of my gg grandfather supposedly born at Caernarvon Castle in Wales. Apparently his father was posted there as a soldier during a war. My gg grandfather Charles Ramsay was born c1850s and his fathers name was Henry. Census materials suggests that they were both born in Whitechapel/Aldgate London but my mother distinctly remembers a story about Caernarvon Castle...... Maybe it was a fairy tale - who knows?! I can't find him at the registers at the FRC. Thanks for all your help. Kind regards Angela
