Is it easy to obtain Army records at Kew? am getting confused with National Archives and Public Records Office!. Trying to find info. on Gt.Grandfather, in British army, Pakistan. Charles Edgar Wright. Also, is there any records held from Woolwich Barracks, where he joined from around 1880s?..

Hi Christine! The National Archives is the new name for the Public Record Office at Kew, so don't worry, you're not as confused as you think!!! I haven't been, so can't advise you on the ins and outs I'm afraid. Maz. XX

Hi The Records Office at Kew is filled with helpful staff and helpful leaflets to help you work out how to find out your info. This site gives you a chance to start working out which records you'll be after - and whether what you want is likely to be there: http://www.*nationalarchives.*gov.*uk/ They are (understandably) very particular about what you are allowed to carry into the archive areas and it's worth working out how little you can take with you so you don't have to leave things in the locker(s). On the other hand, it's possible to get permission to take in your own means of scanning††† - but check first in case things have changed (or I misunderstood). There is a decent eatery there if you want to stay a long time. This site has some overlap - and specifically some India stuff: http://www.*nationalarchivist.*com/ This is the Families in British India site: http://www.*fibis.*org/ I think I saw an India research tips section with a link from the GR Home page, but it's so slow I can't check just now. good luck anyway Christine ††† not a scanner but I think there was something about digital cameras under special permission - but haven't found any mention on the site.
