Angela Give the Leicester site another try. They've recently given it a radical overhaul. It's much faster and you can search within directories rather than having millions of irrelevant hits. I had got to the point of thinking it was interesting but a slog... A different league now. But make sure you get to the right starting page. If you use an old bookmark you'll get the old version. I have found directories useful to find addresses between censuses. Also my G Grandfather changed from being a bricklayer to being a grocer and the local directories helped pinpoint when that was (1853) I find the Leicester Uni site very good but sooo sloowww that I give up on it. Directories for local areas can usually be found in the local archives and libraries. I keep promising myself a prolonged visit sometime!! Anne

Hi All, Just a thought to start a thread on what Directories yourselves have found and what valuable info you have found from them, and where they are, if they are on www. Obviously the first one's are the trade dir's. The info I gained from these ... I could not find, and have yet to find on a census, one of my connected ancestors, but found them in the trade / commercial directories, under both boat builders & publicans, from 1841 to 1872. (Why not on the Censuses, ?????.) The largest collection of these I have come accross to date are held at the Minet Library in Lambeth. Other directories of note which seemed to be totally out of area are of Leicester marriages, which were in Croydon, Surrey of all places, Hope this info helps someone, Regards J.C...............Since adding the above message John 52 32 + has supplied the website which some, dir's that is, are on www, check out historical directories you may find something which will help with your research.
