I agree with Anne East that registration between 1837 and 1875 was not compulsory, and I guess it was the same with the early censuses as well. So much info are missing and we will never complete our tree as we would love to, including the IGI not being very reliable cos too many gaps and missing records! Nevermind but make the most of what you got! Caz

Some are registered as just 'male' or 'female' if names hadn't been decided. Maz. XX

Anne If the marriage you can't find is connected to the children whose registration you can't find, maybe they were illegitimate - therefore no marriage, and they might have been registered in the mother's name. nell

Unfortunately it was not compulsory to register until 1875. Some families thought that baptism = registration. And I guess some, like mine, couldn't be bothered!!!! Anne

Could it be that the Clarke babies were not born as Clarkes - i.e. adopted and given new names?

Did everybody register their babies ? I have been looking for registrations for the Clarke family children born between 1850 and 1870 and cant find any of them. Some were christened but none registered. Have been to the family record office but no luck there. Also could not find a marriage which took place either in Monken Hadley or Barnet in about 1852. Are the records complete? Anne.
