Hi Gwyneth I think it means that Emma did not wish to act as executix and passed over the duty to a third party: maybe a solicitor.

Arthur died without a will in mid 1950s leaving his widow Emma. There were no children of the marriage. We sent for Letters and it reveals that Emma renounced them. What does this mean in this context?
