Viv Make it a cappucchino! Actually Hitchin is turning into a coffee republic. The tea & coffee house has become Starbucks and we have Cafe Rouge & Cafe Nero as well as Thornton's! had another look at 1881 - found a Harry Boston b Ipswich Suffolk 1857 age 24 labourer - noone else anywhere likely. nell

Helen, Thank you, thank you, thank you! It must be him. I'd found him retired on the 1901 census. I owe you a coffee sometime. Thanks again Viv

Viv I had a look on police-orders website, they have a Boston (no first names) who was pensioned 23/10/1898. His warrant was S7275, no. 204, division D. Division D = Marylebone So this could be your man. Records of Met Police pensioners who retired/resigned between 1852-1932 who qualifed for a pension are kept in Kew in class MEPO 21. These contain personal records, including physical description, date and place of birth, marital status, dates of service. Before 1923 names of parents and next of kin are given. To use this class you need to know the date of retirement, which you have above. [This info from www*.gendocs*.demon*.co*.uk/police*.html] remove * first. nell

He was a Police Constable and was living in Marylebone in 1891. How can I trace his service records? Would he have been in the Metropolitan Police Force? Viv

Where was he a policeman? Metropolitan police I believe have quite good records, lots of info on subject, some records at Kew under class MEPO. Counties and even towns at one stage had their own police forces and these records are likely to be in the local County Record Office, with content and survival rates obviouslt varying from place to place. Have the name Henry Joseph Boston. No d.o.b., place etc.. but he was a Policeman and had died before 1915. How do I trace him? Any ideas? Had a daughter Sarah born circa 1883-1884. Viv
