hi, i went "grave- spotting" yesterday - i agree with that if the sun is shining on it - or the letters are faded away it is very hard to make out the letters. you really need to shield the stone from the sun - (didnt try the loo roll thing tho !) i also traced my fingers very lightly in the grooves of the letters - sort of like a blind person would & you can usually make out the letters. My 3 boys were particularly good at that. all in all we visited 4 graveyards yesterday & lots of people went past - some said hello(older people) but no one seemed bothered that we were there. hope that helps sam ps - i believe that you are not allowed to do rubbings of gravestones anymore because it can damage the stone - i would check with the local vicar first. i know that when i went on a trip with some schoolchildren recently - that was certainly the case

There are some good tips on photographing gravestones here. http://www.britishwargraves.org.uk/newsite/photography_guide.htm http://www.mapleleaflegacy.ca/mllpoct2000website/howtohelp.html#The%20Project%20%20Photo%20Guide One suggestion is to spray water on the gravestone. I haven't tried that, I usually take photographs from various angles and close-ups of any important details. MB

If covered with ivy, DO NOT attempt to pull it off. Clip ivy and return when ivy has died. I destroyed chunks of a deteriorating gravestone by impatience. Take a cardboard tube, hold close to inscription and look down it. The idea is that the letters are illuminated obliquely, so are easier to read. You may get strange looks though! Brenda

I want to look in a local graveyard, but is this allowed. I would imagine you would get some funny looks while hunting around the graves.

have you tried taking rubbings, you need a large piece of paper and a crayon or soft pencil place the paper over the area you want and rub over it with the crayon or pencil you should get a imprint I used to do it with old coins. Freda
