How old to get married??

Anyone know if you could get married at 14 in the late 1700s? One of mine seems to have!! Cheers Sarah

Yes, it was 12 for girls and 14 for boys but they still needed parental/guardian's consent if they were under 21. This was changed for both sexes to 16 only in 1926. Interestingly, if a girl married with parental consent when she was under 21, then was widowed, she could remarry without parental consent the second time, even if still under 21, as once she married her father lost parental control over her. nell
