I went to the FRC, hoping that they're indexes to the naturalisation records at Kew were up until the 1940s plus. BUT they only went up to 1936. I know that my great uncles naturalised themselves after 1939. Is Kew the only place I can go where I will find the records?

I do not think that you will find these records anywhere else but at the National Archives at Kew. Try their website: www.nationalarchives.gov.uk You can download a leaflet on this subject from the Catalogue and that should give you all the info you want as to where else you might find any other records.
