Philip, Northampton Record Office have a brilliant research service. They charge £14 per hour. You end up with a report, plus photocopies and transcriptions. They will give suggestions as to what might be looked for next. you can phone them at 01604 762129 Rosemary(Essex)

The local record office should have the parish registers, the census for the area from 1841-1901 (and possibly earlier ones though these are usually headcounts) and a wealth of other material - maps, court cases, rent books etc. They probably have a website which will tell you more about their holdings. nell

There's also the free, searchable census records gradually appearing on FreeCEN: various counties to various degrees 1891, 1871, 1861 , 1851, 1841. (It's a sister site to FreeBMD). UKBMD also has well organised links - including specifically census ones. Wills are a useful data source - a large number are on Documents online - both the England & Wales and the Scottish version, apparently. I've often found useful stuff by putting assorted combinations of names/place/dates into a search engine. There are also county-linked threads on this Tips board... Just put the county name into the search slot. good hunting Chrisitne

Hi Philip, The 1881 census is free online at FamilySearch. 1891 is available on Ancestry - if you don't want to pay just ask on here: plenty of people have subscriptions and are willing to do lookups. Some of 1871 is also on Ancestry. 1851 and 1841 you need to ask on here or visit a record office local to the area. Which part of the country are you in? If you are near London there are lots of things you can do without having to travel. Happy hunting. Janice

Have a look at: http://www.northamptonshire.gov.uk/Community/Record+Office/Home.htm They're really good at this office. There has even been a thread in praise of them recently. Good luck.

I have traced my Great Grandfather back to 1825 on the internet. Information I have seen refers to the 1881 census. I would like a few tips on where to go from here. The family 'seat' is Castor, Northamptonshire. Do I go up and ask the local vicar if I can view the Parish Records or do I write? Is this the next place to search, and having accessed and paid for viewings on the internet of the 1901 census - how do I access earlier versions? Do I have to visit the Northampton County Library or something? Help appreciated. Regards Philip
