Theresa, I found his grave on the Commenwealth site and on the Australian site every other soldier etc above and below him on the page had a pdf file and or a photo. The pdf file contained details such as service history.Wouldn't they have put this on if it was available? Debbi xxx

Hello Debbie, if you have found your man on the War memorial site in Canberra you should be able to order his war record, sometimes there is more info like next of kin etc, its well worth the effort, i gather you mean for the WW1. The census is always destroyed unfortunatly 2001 is the first one that part of it was saved due to a genie push over here, it is such a shame all that info we will never have. Debbi, Sorry the only one listed (that i could find) is 1841 but that is also broken into States and Territory...not easy at all! On the Oz genes society site, they mention that only two census records have been saved...don't know what they mean, but it explains alot. They're currently trying to save the 2001 census...from what ever happens to them!! The Federation of Australia was in 1901, so the census probably wasn't at the fore front of their minds. Census in Oz is run by the bureau of statistics..number crunchers...no use at all. If you have his service number, can you not ask for his posting details, they should also have a listing of his dependants. Did he die whilst serving? My Hubby comes home this weekend, i'll ask if members have special access to records, he was a sig too but for the army. TTFN, Mel :-) p.s. navy site is www(.)navy(.)gov(.)au.

Hi Have you tried getting any extra info from the CWGC* site? Given his date of death, that seems a good prospect. It doesn't seem to be functioning now this minute. (I tried - it doesn't even show my great uncle whom I know is on there 'cos I've seen his record.) *Commonwealth War Graves Commission. http://www(.)cwgc(.)org/cwgcinternet/search(.)aspx Christine

Thanks for that Mel, I found him but sadly he had no pdf file like the rest and it dont give his first name but as he is buried in Barnstaple and was born there and all my family on that side are there too I think he is my Henry/Harry Emery who in 1891 was on board a naval training ship in Plymouth and then disappears(to Australia) from any records. National Archives - www(.)naa(.)gov(.)au/the_collection/familyhistory/armed_services(.)html Or Aust. War Memorial - www(.)awm(.)gov(.)au *Remove brackets. Happy searching, Mel:-) p.s. if you have trouble with the first address, you can try getting there via www(.)defence(.)gov(.)au scroll down to other links.
