I am trying to help my recently bereaved friend to find her stepbrother. Can I put a posting on the board if his surname is not on my list of names? If I can't do that could I 'marry' him on my tree, (wouldn't give him parents or any children)then delete him as I like the husband I have at home! At the moment there is no mention of my husband or children so that wouldn't change. Trying to cope with changes on the site and changes in daily life so any help would be welcome, please.

add the name to your tree as a pretend relative first. jenny x

Gwyneth I wouldn't add anyone still alive to your tree as there are rules about that - you need the person's permission first. I think you can just put a message on the Trying to Find board. You only need people in your tree if you are wanting to see if it matches a name on someone else's tree. nell

I hear what you are saying Nell but you cannot post unless the name features in 'Your Names' and they aren't going to be there unless they are on my tree. I accept your comment about living people so perhaps I should make up a first name for him with the correct surname. I have seen recent messages about not being able to delete people but wonder if there would be a problem about this imaginary person as long as he has no parents or children to anchor him.

Oh Jenny, I'm not so imaginative as you! My child was called David but I have 'lost' him now. Your idea worked, that's the main thing and I've already had an answer from Australia re. the posting I placed. More an offer of how else to search but it was a kind response which shows the goodwill of most people here.
