Hi there, hopefully this will put your mind at rest - I became a full member of GR on 17th August. I can remember taking a good look at the site prior to paying my money and it does not allow you to contact members or view others trees if you have not become a full member. (I only remember as it was only a couple of weeks ago.......)

Carole, I understand the terms and conditions, but it's naive of GC to expect everyone to actually follow the rules. It doesn't happen in real life!

Andy - that is why it tells you that you must ask permission of anyone living before you put their details on here. I must admit it does worry me slightly, especially as a common security question is "What is your mother's maiden name?" but the up-side is that I have made contact with descendants of 3 of my grandfather's brothers! Brenda, Don't let it worry too much. If this person wants information why would they not tell you the connection? and again I go back to the fact that they are not even a member of Genes. I would definetly decline if I were you especially if you have living people on the tree. Any problems Genes I am sure would help you out. Take Care Pat x

Personally I wouldn't put a tree on this site with any living person on it but myself, it's too open to abuse. I wonder if doing that may be an abuse on the Data Protection Act!

very interesting the person who has asked (who i have already given info to) doesnt say the connection and as my tree is quite extensive now and does contain living people as well i thought no. i have never seen this person post any messages on any of the boards. but am i being mean. brenda x

Brenda, I have just been looking at the New Terma and Conditions it states: I cannot find anything that states what NON Members are allowed to do and what they are not all to do. I found is this: 'Please also note that some or all of the family tree details and/or message board postings you input onto the Genes Reunited Service may be capable of being viewed by non-Members who access the relevant information by means of searches conducted through internet search engines and the like'. So I reckon I would think twice before allowing anyone that does not pay the cash, to get the benefit. But its entirely up to you what you think is right. You can contact Genes for help. Good Luck Pat x

Brenda, Thats a good question, I dont know the answer to it myself, all I can say is if they are allowed why am I paying a subscription? I actually wouldnt like to allow non members view my tree not that anyone has ever asked to look at my Bonsai LOL Hopefully others out there will Know, there also should be somewhere on the site thats says what full and non members can do or cannot do, I will have a look around.
