As for the WW1 info, it may be worth looking at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Website, www.cwgc.org. Part of the web site has a search facility called the “Debt of Honour” which is a database that has details of 1.7 million members of the Commonwealth forces who lost their lives during WWI and WWII. The register also includes details of 67,000 Commonwealth civilians who lost their lives as a result of enemy action during WWII. If a match is returned for a search, some or all of the following information will be displayed: • Name • Service details such as rank and regiment • Date of death • Parents’ names and address • Spouses’ name and address • Memorial details giving the name of the cemetery and location of the grave including directions on how to find it.

Sally I don't think there are any newspapers you can see on the web apart from a selected few nationals for a few odd years on the British Library site, which is experimental at the moment. Local newspapers will be on microfilm at a record office/archive or library in the area. nell
