Janet - no probs, had just been looking up something similar for a rellie who died in a 'industrial colony' (apparently a hospital/home for 'imbeciles'), so I was already on the case, so to speak. Glad to have been of help :)

Janet - if you search for it on Google you'll find numerous links that give info about it - the one I looked at quickly does say it was used for maternity cases and TB patients, so sounds like your 'hunch' is correct............

Thanks to Anne I now know there was an unmarried mothers unit at the above. However, I have found that this closed during the 30's and a full maternity unit opened. I need to know when this happened as I think my relative was registered as his grandparents child. If anyone has any ideas when this change took place or whether I should contact the Essex records office or health authority, please let me know. Thank you Janet PS Hope this all makes sense!
