Kellys or other Postal Directories is one possinble answer although you may need to know the name of the pub first. Most people tended to live on pub premises back in the 1880's so I am surprised the name and/or address is not on the 1881 census. There is an article with many websites on Pubs, Publicans and Breweries in Family Tree Magazine September 04 page 42-43 of the Family Tree Connect part of the magazine. Once you find your pub/pubs you can also access the Licences maybe through Record Office although for Liverpool we did this through the main library. Janet

If your relative was a publican on the 1881 census, was he living in the pub? What is the address he has? Licensed victuallers had to have licenses and I know there are records of these for the London area at the London metropolitan archives. Presumably these records would also be at the record offices in the rest of the country. As to the properties he owned, did he leave a Will? nell

try a2a archives and see if your relatives name is listed under the victuallars recognisances. It worked for me, just put in their name on the search. Good luck

Tildesley, Whats his name, approx age? and area? in 1881? I would think if it said proprietor of houses that he did own property, not entirely sure though. Pat x

Can anyone tell me how I can find out where my Great Great Grandfather was a publican (which pub) this was from the 1881 census. Also on a death certificate I have him as a proprietor of houses. Does this mean he owned them?? If so, where can I find out what he owned??? Hope somewone can help.
