I have also found it very useful, although only when I know the rough years I am searching around. One thing I have found useful though, if any of your relatives died between 1984-2002 and you seach for and find their death, it will give their exact date of birth! (if you don't know it already, obviously) Sam

To be honest, I was delighted to discover the site. It is a lot less costly and tiring than travelling to the Family Record Centre in London. Despite looking-up a common surname (Taylor) it seemed to be fairly simple to search, after 5 mins practise.

Do you live near a big library? Many of them have the whole GRO index on microfiche that you can search through. Takes lots of time and patience but at my library it's free! Maggy

That's the risk you take, I'm afraid. FreeBMD has some images, if you're lucky you might find what you need there, Everything is strictly alphabetical, so if you're looking for surname BROAD, don't be disheartened by 30 pages of BRO results - most are probably Brown. The only tip I have is when looking for a marriage, go for the spouse with the most unusual surname.

Does anyone have any tips regarding using this site efficiently. I used up all my credits in one go and didn't even find my first person. It seems to me that unless you know the year of BMD, it wastes a lot of money searching. I was so disgusted I only used the site once, but I've heard others use it successfully. Any advice would be appreciates. Patricia
