im back had a weekend away for my birthday very nice too. now then john i could never find my grandmother on the 1901 census searched for about 12 months thinking why the h**** cant i find them. she had a sister elizabeth born 1886 and a brother james born 1892. i knew james had been killed in the 1st world war so i tracked him down. pvte james griffiths born bebington died 1915 son of sarah ann wright (formerly griffiths.) so i now know sarah has married a mr wright. doing a blind search of first name on the 1901 i came up with ralph wright sarah bessie (my grandmother) born bebington elizabeth born bebington and james born bebington. these children were all the right ages and i knew sarah had married a wright so the coincidence is just to great not to be them. All living in bebington by the way. on the 1891 they were in bebington too. i traced sarahs marriage to ralph and she was married in 1898 in lancs our lady of st nicholas with st ann. Funnily enough the same church she had married james griffiths in. i too could not understand why they married in lancs but remember the work might have been in liverpool and a lot of people moved over there. the address on sarah and james marriage cert is parliament st. this church by the way is very close to the pier head where the ferries call in. this search has been one long haul. Kim now i have the marriage cert i know sarahs father was named John and jamess john. the storeton one looks promising. when bessie (my grandmother) married the address on her cert said storeton this was 1910. as for james i know he was a labourer and that could be him too. i feel more certs coming on (dont tell my hubby) i need to find sarahs birth to find her mums name . i suppose when it comes down to it we all have doubts if weve found the right one but im going with intuition on this one. my dads family of orams 1655 no problem. this one i need sherlock holmes.! love ans thanks to you all brenda x

Brenda, Playing devil's advocate here, but how do you know that is your couple? Both born in Cheshire but marring in Lancs.? Yes the children may be right for that couple but are they yours? Not trying to be akward just wondering if this is why you can't find them Cheers, John

As far as I know, rounding UP never occurred. 1841 used 15 to mean 15-19 20 to mean 20-24 etc

john 8b 145 sept qtr 1885 lancs james griffiths and sarah ann johnson. both signed it with an x as their mark. when i received their daughters birth cert mother as sarah ann griffiths formerly johnson again marked with an x. just to make it even more confusing on 1891 census she was born in bebington. on 1901 census married to ralph wright born kelsall she was down as being born kelsall. however i know it was the right sarah because the children were correct. no probs on my fathers side of the family but my mothers is proving a right headache would love to find them both in 1881 but so far they have eluded me. kindest regards everyone brenda x

Are you sure her surname was Johnson? The cert you ordered had a Sarah Royden. There are others in Cheshire all married to a James Griffiths. Northwich Dec. 1881 sarah Mills Chester 1871 Sarah Jones Chester 1872 Sarah Parry Oh by the way the rounding up only occured in 1841 Regards John

Oh how I know how you feel! I think the rounding of the census age to the nearest 5 only applied to the 1841 census. After that they were supposed to be accurate, but for lots of reasons they are not: people lied, people forgot, someone else in the family gave the info to the enumerator and got it wrong, enumerator (overworked and underpaid in many cases) transcribed incorrectly from original form onto the sheet, subsequent transcribers mistranscribed. It seems our ancestors were much more casual about when, and sometimes where, they were born than we are today in our over-documented lives. Personally, if no one else appears to fit the bill, I would not worry about the ages not being perfect. I have a great-great-grandfather who married for the second time to a considerably younger lady and as I follow him from census to census, the older he gets, the younger he gets, if you follow me! He was 61 when his last (and 11th) child was born and died 4 years later - probably worn out! Tina

found my gt grandfather on 1891 james griffiths born thornton cheshire age 36 so possibly born 1854 found gt grandmother with him sarah ann griffiths (nee johnson) age 27 born bebington cheshire so possibly born 1864 their first child was born in 1886 so looked for a marriage about then james griffiths and sarah ann johnson sept qtr lancs 1885 no other one found anywhere. by 1901 james was dead and sarah remarried. on 1901 census sarah ann wright (formerly griffiths) age 40 so now possibly born 1861! ordered the marriage cert for james and sarah 1885 his age down as 26 so now possibly born 1859 sarahs age as 21 so possibly born 1864. i am so fed up now wondering if i have the right cert. i have never found either of them on the 1881. i couldnt wait for this cert to arrive so i might be able to carry on my search by finding out their fathers names but sob sob no. did james lie about his age cos he was older? love brenda x
