My grandfather was in the Royal Artillary and served in Durbin, South Africa and Bengal enroute to Australia where he was stationed at Albert Park Barracks Melbourne. The family stories go that he left the army, but then rejoined ( Oz army) and off he went to the 1st world war, his rank was Major. Does anyone know..how or where..I can get any info on him without having his regiment. thanks, Kaye.

Do you have any clues in the family? After a lot of prodding my mother found my grandfather's WW1 medals which have his service number on them, as well as letters he wrote with his company name on them. I think if he was a Major he would also be in the Army Lists for those dates? See this leaflet from The National Archives: www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/Leaflets/ri2017.htm nell

Kaye If he was in the AIF then his service records will be held by the Australian War Dept. Not sure of their contact info - the Imperial War Museum in London will have it, but do a websearch for Australian Service Records - they do have a site. If you have any medals from WW1 then his name/rank/number and Regiment will be on the rim of the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. If he was in the British Army prior to WW1 then his army service records may well exist and will be held at the National Archives, Kew. Ian
