looks like I'm one of the lucky one our main library in Sutton holds all the BMD to 1900 which you can search for free. On the downside the archive room are only open limited hours and at the moment the whole library is having a major refurb so only basic book lending going on :-((( Shelli

Well how outrageous. Why pay if you can find it free?

Birmingham Central Library charges a small fee (think its 50p an hour) to use reader for fiches!! The Mormon Family History Centre I use only had the deaths up to 1903 - but I needed c1958. Didn't notice how recent in the births and marriages.

Wendy All the places listed in the above webaddress are free. Record offices don't charge you to use their services apart from photocopies etc. Of course when I say "free" they are paid for by our taxes, so we should make the most of them. nell

If anyone is interested, the Essex record office in Chelmsford has a Family History Room which has the GRO index for the whole country available on fiche for free. You do not need to be a member - just ring and make an appointment. Wendy

Hi there, This is an excellent site but I think that you will find many more places where you can search the GRO. You will probably find that all the LDS libraries have these. The one that I go to has some on film and some on fiche but these would not be listed on a government site. Mary

Yes In Norwich, a genealogist who runs a family history stall on the market told me a few months ago that the library has all the GRO indexes on microfiche. If only I'd known that in London, as I was researching my London ancestry, then I could of just looked at the indexes at home then done more on the censuses of London and baptism records while in London. I now use my librarys GRO indexes quite often now.
