I'm hoping someone can help with this brickwall I have Eliza/Elizabeth Richards nee Smith born Hull about 1840 She married and had 2 children , presumably also in Hull 1871 census she is listed as a visitor with John Garfield in Spitalfields, Whitechapel 1881 census she is listed as Eliza Garfield and has a daughter Eliza How do I find the Hull connection..husband and children and what ever happened to them? My aunt remembers going with her grand mother to Hull to visit the children once, so they did survive, but no names known ever hopeful, always grateful, Sylvia

On the 1891 census there is a Eliza Garfield age 56, widow, born in Hull, living in Whitechaple with daughter Eliza age 10 born in Deptford London. On the 1881 it has daughter Eliza born in Bermondsey, Surrey. Although I see on the Registration Index that Deptford is a subdistrict of Greenwich which was, up until 1889, in Kent and Surrey as was Bermondsey. Did she marry John Garfield before or after Mr Richards? If she married Mr Richards first I wonder why she would appear with her maiden name on the 1871 census. On the IGI there is a marriage record for Eliza Smith and John Richards 19 Oct 1862 St James Westminster London. Her father's name is listed as Abraham Smith. I couldn't find a marriage record on FreeBMD. You could ask if some kind soul could try and find Eliza on the 1861 census.
