Demolished street? Does anyone know...

My granddad lived in Gresham Street Openshaw early 1900's. The registration districts were different then. It may have been Chorlton reg district

Thanks to all of you, not knowing an area does sometimes hinder my progress in searching for my family as I have no idea what parish or district an area might have been in at that time or where they are in relation another location. It's FAR easier with my family from Stoke where I know the locality and know where areas are and whether they are close by or not! Sam

Sam Hi, Not wanting to appear big-headed, but if you type my name 'Hazel Neild' in Google U.K. search.... 2nd item will be about Meeridian St. Manchester. Click on this and you will get Manchester Library archives. Look down right-hand side and you will find various lists. The street you want isn't there, but you can ask for a photo to be shown next time and I have had success every time. I didn't type the link for you as it is long and GC/GR might knacker it up as they do. Good luck Hazel

Hi I used to work in Openshaw in the 1960s and I think I remember a Gresham St. There's been so much demolition along Ashton New Road & Ashton Old Rd that go through Openshaw that it's likely to have been demolished. The Gresham St in Denton is not the same one. I doubt whether Denton would ever have been part of Openshaw. The Local Studies Library in Manchester Central Library should be able to check old maps and copy them for a modest fee. eg. Tameside Local Studies copied me maps for 20 pence each! Give them a ring or email

There's a Gresham St in Denton Manchester (found on streetmap(.)co.uk) could it be that the district boundaries have changed? good luck xx Dave

..if there has ever been a Gresham Street in Openshaw, Manchester? I am looking at an image of the 1871 census and the district is Openshaw and I'm certain that the street is Gresham Street. However I can find no reference to it past or present other than a website that advises you to go to Manchester Library and look in the archives. Unfortunately I dont live in Manchester so this isn't very practical! Any help much appreciated Sam
