If one of them has mother's name Baker you have the right one! I have a James Nethercott who married Martha Baker - their first child, born before their marriage, was Robert Baker, father James Nethercott. Wendy

Thanks Kate and Nell for your help. I have applied for two possible birth certificates for Thomas and expect them any day now. Hopefully one of them may shed some light onto why William Horne adopted him. Thanks Russell

It will say on Thomas Baker's birth certificate who his parents were - or parent, if he was illegitimate. There won't be any official records of adoption or name-change.

From this websites's "Getting Started" section on Adoption: Adoption "Before formal adoption came into existence 1927 it can be very difficult to discover the original name of an adopted child." That's all it says! Have you looked for Thomas' birth certificate? nell

I have just found out that my ancestor whom i thought was Thomas HORNE, was actually Thomas BAKER and was adopted by William Horne sometime in the 1850's. Were there any adoption records back then?, as i need to find out who Thomas' real parents were. Many thanks Russell
