If someone put Wapping as their place of birth on a census, is it likely that they are the same person who's birth was registered in the district of Pancras? Is there a lot of distance between the districts? I am so stuck on this woman!! Sarah

Sarah - can't say it's a definite, but it is quite feasible. Many of my ancesters are from London, I have noticed that 'birthplace' can vary from source to source for the same person(s).

1871/81/91 census all say Wapping. But I cannot find anyone born in 1844/5 with her name anywhere in London. (her name is Jane Sutherland, became Jane Merrett in 1867). The nearest I have found is Sarah Jane Sutherland born in Pancras. I have that certificate, father John Sutherland, so that is right, but I am not entirely sure it is her. Sarah

You could easily walk between St Pancras and Wapping. However, they are not adjacent and you would not confuse one with another. If the person you are researching moved as a very small child, they would name the place they thought they were born. Information on censuses is always less likely to be accurate than certificates. Questions to ask are: is your person the head of the household, or perhaps a servant or lodger? Is birthplace the same as census district? My great granny, working in Portsmouth as a cook, has her birthplace given, not as Bideford, but as Portsmouth. Do you have the person on a single census, or on several? If they always maintain they were born in Wapping, then Wapping it probably was, and their birth might not be registered if it were before 1875. Brenda
