Dowlas payments

That's what I thought at first but it is virtually the whole village and exactly the same names are there year after year after year. |

Payments made to the poor to buy the Dowlas they needed to make clothes for the year maybe? Just a thought Debbi xxx |

On reading the Poor Law register for East Pennard in Somerset every year there was an entire page entitled Dowlas payments for this year. I know that dowlas is a type of cloth but does anyone know why people would have got these 'payments' from the Poor Law officials - even after the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act. jan |
