Dowlas payments

That's what I thought at first but it is virtually the whole village and exactly the same names are there year after year after year.

Payments made to the poor to buy the Dowlas they needed to make clothes for the year maybe? Just a thought Debbi xxx

On reading the Poor Law register for East Pennard in Somerset every year there was an entire page entitled Dowlas payments for this year. I know that dowlas is a type of cloth but does anyone know why people would have got these 'payments' from the Poor Law officials - even after the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act. jan
