I know that Isaac Langford was born in Mountmellick, Ireland in approximately 1840 - is it possible to get a birth cert for him - if so how? I think birth regs didn't start till 1864 or something - how do I get parish records without travelling to ireland? Totally stumped and in desperate need of an angel! Helen

For Mount Mellick you could try the Laoise/Offaly Family History site at: http://www.irish-roots.net/laoisoff.htm. This may not be of much help, and may have to consider paying someone to do your research or take a trip to Dublin, in which case you will need the National Library in Dublin for all records prior to 1864. The National Library is where you will find the parish records, which is what you will be looking for in 1840. To access these records you do need to understand about Baronies/ Parishes and Townlands( you can do a google search on these) and whether or not your ancestors were protestant or catholic. If you know the Townland you can pull in records from your Local LDS Centre. You will not get the same sort of birth cert as we get in the UK, for 1840 period but you will get names of parents and sponsors. If you know the exact place your ancestors are from you can go to the local church and ask nicely to see the registers. You can try to write, but priests do not always reply as they are very busy people and don't always find Family History as interesting as we do!
