Pat....opening a .ged will not affect your tree in any way. the .ged file is a seperate file than your tree. You can, if you choose, import the file into your tree or just type the new information, if relevent, into your tree. Judy

Anne: If the e-mail sent to you has multiple attachments, ie more than one file attached to it, in order to "unzip" it, you need to download WINZIP. There is a free evaluation version that you can download at www.winzip(.)com - remember to remove the ( ) from the address. Your PC has no trouble opening single files sent via e-mail but your PC does not come with a program to open multiple attachments so you will need this program or a similar one. If this is not the problem, find the file you wish to open, place your mouse over the file and RIGHT click on it. When the drop down box appears, choose OPEN WITH. The family tree porgram on your PC should be showing (if you have one on your PC.) If it's not showing, click on BROWSE and you will be able to scroll your PC, find the family tree program and click on that. This will open the .ged program for you. Judy

Hi Ann, If you are still having problems download the PAF programme which is free on the familysearch website. You can open gedcoms in this and print off the pages you need then enter the details into your own programme. I usually open gedcoms in PAF because I don't want all the people sent to me on gedcomss, only those connected to my family. Gwynne

Ann, I use Family Tree Maker, but other programs also work in the same way. I always find it best to download the gedcom to a site. Desktop or Documents will do. The with your family history program, go to open a new file. It will ask where the file is ?. Simply put in where you have loacated it. This should work for you. Good luck, Roy (David)
