Aliases often imply illegitimacy, though not always so. They can also be used over very long periods of time: not just a single generation. Brenda

Thanks for replying Judith, my thought was Wallington was his fathers name, and May his mothers, and he was born prior to them marrying - a little odd

I would take this to mean that Geoffrey Wallington was his 'official' name but that he was also known as Geoffrey May. One example that comes to mind was someone who was registered in his mother's surname but was known by his stepfather's surname. Judith

On my mothers Birth Certificate under the fathers details it states "Geoffrey WALLINGTON otherwise MAY" Can any one help me with the meaning of the above. I have one or two suspicions but need them confirming. He never married my Grandmother and when she did her husband officially adopted my mother. Thanks Rebecca
