Think it depends. 'FS' stands for Foreign Subject. My great grandparents are down as Germany FS on the 1901, having been in England for 2 years. My great grandfather died in 1939, still German, as did my great grandmother in 1912, still German. However as far as I know they were not interned in the camps in WWI. Think this was because two of their sons, German born, fought in the first world war for Britain, thus their parents were not interned. These sons later naturalised themselves after the WW2. Chloe

Hello aileen Dont know if this will help at all but my g/g/grandmother was listed as german too. When i looked at the actual census it was wrongly transcribed and should have said Guernsey! Ive learned now to look at the actual census but then I spent ages looking for a German link ! Regards Nikki

I can't help you directly, but The National Archives has a research leaflet online about internees of both WW1 and WW2 here: www*.catalogue*.nationalarchives*.gov*.uk/RdLeaflet*.asp?sLeafletID=224 remove * first. Nell

My great great grandfather was stated as being a German FS on one of the censuses (can't remember which one) and I've also recently heard that he was interned during WW1...does that mean he wasn't naturalised?? Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question!!... is it worth my while going to Kew to check the records to see if he is there?? Also I've been told that there are lists of internees at Kew....could someone please confirm this and give me some info on what I have to do next...thanks a bunch..Aileenx
