thanks Chloe, that looks quite likely. I managed to find Mary ann's birth on familysearch and it shows her mother as Amelia Elizabeth Haines. I found Amelia's birth and it is in West Drayton.

Is that the 1881 Canadian census? Found those details on the Canadian so just wanted to make sure and make it clear.

Ooops! Sorry....I missed copying the census year....it was 1881. His birth year showed on this census as 1876 although it could go a year either way as birth years are estimated using the age of the person. Judy

Surrey History Service has records relating to Cane Hill and Netherne, though I don't know if this would include patient information. I had an ancestor who was in Broadmoor Asylum from 1863-1910, and after providing the archivist with lots of photocopied certificates to prove my connection with him, all I found out was the date he arrived, and his date and cause of death! Hospital records database shows that records for Netherne are at the Surrey Record Office. I think you would have to demonstrate a relationship eg next of kin to look at records under 75 years old. Brenda

Hi Susie I think this could be him, but I don't know where he was born. The problem is that I have no way of proving whether it is him. According to his death certificate he was born c1883, but his age is different on his marriage certificate. I think this is likely to be his birth because my great grandmother was from London. thank you for your help, Lucia

I am trying to find out more about my great grandfather. He died in a mental hospital in Coulsdon, Surrey in 1952. I have discovered that there were two asylums there - Cane Hill and Netherne. Where can I find records for these hospitals? and What would they reveal? I don't know much about him - only that his name was Albert Goodge(I'm not even sure if that is his real name) and there is a rumour that he was German. I have his marriage certificate which I hoped would help me get back further, but I think he lied about his father because I can't find any Albert Goodge with a father called Alfred on 1881 census. I have looked at historical directories for Alfred Goodge, a tobacconist, but I can't find anything. I have tried the 1901 census, but I have no way of knowing whether I have found the right person as none of the family know anything about him and my grandfather didn't have any contact with his father's family. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Thank you for your help, Lucia
