Can anyone tell me if Thanet is anywhere near Whitstable. Being from the really wet and soggy North East, I have no idea of where towns etc are in the Kent area. Would it be feasable for someone from Whitstabel to marry in THanet?? Kay

Hallo Thanet is not a place, it is the Isle of Thanet, which sticks out just under London, with Margate, Broadstairs and Ramsgate on its furthest bit. Whitstable is a little further inland, on the northern coast just to the left of Herne Bay. I would certainly consider these places to be local. If you go to www*ukstreetmap*co*uk, replacing * with . you can get a map and find them for yourself. LN

Hi Kay it would be very feasable for someone from Whitstable to marry someone from Thanet, been done many times in my tree. Work was the main reason it was all Farmland so people used to go where the work was, not too far from home. Thanet Used to be an Island but the waterway which devided it from the mainland dried up but it is to this day is still called isle. there are a lot of small villages as well as Margate Ramsgate being probabley the bigger of the two which incorporate St lawrence and St Peters. I was born in Thanet dont know everthing of course, but a fair bit hope that helps a bit Shan

Just to confuse everyone, I live near Tenterden, the name of which derives from Thanet. It actually means 'The clearing in the forest where the men of Thanet keep their pigs'......pub quizzes, anyone?
