The Hugh Wallis site covers this in his FAQ - more girls are on the IGI than boys and some batches are entirely female. The LDS's excuse is something along the lines of more women visit the temple than men ... maybe women only transcribe female records!

Geoff thanks for that info... most of ties in with what i've found..... It's eliza that i'm most interested in as she is the direct ancestor. I have found a possible birth for her in dec 1865, so that will be my next line of search. But plenty of food for thought with her siblings, seems henry died and the name was reused mmmmmmmmmm interesting thanks again shelli xx

Joy this is what i've found.... Parents Oswald and Elizabeth Gentle, He was born in Ashwell Herts, She in Baldock Herts. All children were born in Baldock Herts (according to census) William c 1851 George c 1853 Emma c 1859 Henry c 1861 Joseph c 1864 Eliza c 1865 ( direct ancestor) Walter c 1870 I seacrhed IGI for the family and only found Emma bapt 7 Nov 1858 and Eliza 4 feb 1866 both in Baldock. On free Bmd I have found possible birth for George, Eliza and Walter ( will search for others at frc) I have also found a marriage for Oswald and Eliazabeth in the Hitchin reg district which covers Baldock, So it appears they stayed put. I can only assume the register the LDS rec'd only listed girls as the batch Emma and Eliza was in only contained girls. I was curious if this was normal, as i have the links i need to continue but would like to satisfy my curiosity LOL Shelli

I think I have seen a case before when one IGI batch just contained girls and another one only boys. If you search using the Hugh Wallis batch numbers you may find two batches for the same place. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.*com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers.htm NB: I can't get onto the site at the moment. I have one family unit in my own tree in which the girls were brought up as Catholics and the boys as CofE.

hi Helen i checked the batch numbers cos i thought i would show any others that may be missing but it was all girls on there no boys at all wierd?????? what makes it weird for me is the two girls have brothers inbetween them so surely if the girls were baptised then the boys would be too?????????

Shelli This came up a while ago. I don't know what it is, but on the IGI I have a family of 7 girls and when I checked their christenings (Farnham Royal, beginning of the 1800s) there were only girls there. I don't know if this means that certain churches had separate baptism registers for boys and girls, or whether families had boys baptised elsewhere, or whether it is just co-incidence. I do know that boys tended to be more fragile than girls and were sometimes baptised privately at home because their health was at risk, and it was thought they might die. Perhaps someone else can enlighten us. LN
